Jess's Story: Calmer Skin, Less Redness, and a Stronger Barrier in 12 Weeks
I see a lot of skin in my clinic, but every so often a client's journey reflects exactly what I believe about skin health. Jess's story is one of those, and I wanted to share it properly, because 12 weeks in, her skin tells a story I think a lot of people will recognise.
Where Jess started
Jess had dealt with some acne rosacea for years, but it got noticeably worse after she had her gallbladder removed. That's not something people always connect, but it's a good example of how much our internal health shows up on our skin. In her own words, she just wanted her cheeks to stop being "vibrant red."
Her routine, when she came to me, was minimal. A cleanser to remove her makeup, then a moisturiser or tallow and a B5 balm. She was using an IT Cosmetics CC cream and an avocado zinc most days. Facials had always been something she did occasionally, never as part of a consistent plan. Jess is also a busy mum of three, so anything I recommended needed to actually fit into her life, not add to the business of it.
Building a plan that would actually stick
Before we changed anything, I wanted to understand what her skin needed and what she could realistically maintain. Consistency was always going to matter more than complexity here, so I kept the plan simple and focused.
We started fortnightly treatments, alternating bespoke facials with O-Biome, and LED at every single session. My goal from the beginning was to reduce inflammation, strengthen her skin, and build genuine resilience. Everything else, the reduced redness, the improved texture, follows from that foundation.
Her home care, kept realistic
Mornings needed to be quick. Jess's routine was a water cleanse, a medi soothe spray, a repair serum and an SPF15 moisturiser, easy enough to fit in around school drop offs and a busy household.
At night, when she had a little more time, she used a nourishing cleansing balm, the same repair serum, a B12 smart serum and a recovery cream. A weekly sheet mask and daily EFAs rounded out the plan, six a day, which became one of the most important parts of her routine.
We also talked about the basics that often get overlooked. Jess has a dairy sensitivity, and she wasn't drinking anywhere near enough water. Small, practical changes here made a real difference alongside everything we were doing in clinic.
Why we focused on the barrier first
With rosacea and acne together, it's tempting to jump straight to treating what's visible, the redness, the breakouts. I don't work that way. My focus with Jess was on the integrity of her skin barrier first, because a compromised barrier keeps skin inflamed, reactive and unable to properly heal, no matter what you put on top of it.
As her barrier strengthened, we started to see real changes. Her hydration improved. The redness across her cheeks, which had been so constant, started to disperse. Her overall skin health, texture, tone, resilience, shifted in a way that reflected everything happening underneath the surface, not just a temporary calming of symptoms.
Where Jess is now
Twelve weeks in, Jess's skin looks and feels like a different story. Calmer, more hydrated, and visibly less red across the cheeks that used to bother her most.
I do want to be upfront about something important. Rosacea is largely an internal condition, so this isn't a finish line, it's a foundation. I fully expect Jess to keep seeing improvement the longer she stays consistent, both with her skin care and with what's happening internally. This kind of result isn't about a single treatment or product. It's about building resilient, healthy skin from the inside out, and giving it the consistency it needs to keep improving.
What Jess's journey tells me
If your skin feels reactive, inflamed, or like the redness just won't settle no matter what you try, Jess's story might sound familiar. In my experience, real change comes from strengthening the skin barrier first and being consistent with both your in clinic treatment and your home care, not from chasing the next product that promises a quick fix.
I would love to help you understand what's actually happening with your skin, and build a plan around what it truly needs.

Julie's Story: Rebuilding a Compromised Skin Barrier, Inside and Out
Julie's Story: Rebuilding a Compromised Skin Barrier, Inside and Out…
I see a lot of skin in my clinic. But every so often, a client's journey reflects exactly what I believe about skin health, and Julie's story is one of those.
Where Julie started
Julie works as a hairdresser, and spends her days around chemicals most of us would only encounter occasionally. By the time she came to focus properly on her skin, she was dealing with widespread inflammation and an extremely compromised barrier across her face, hands and down onto her neck. Her skin was so reactive that, in the beginning, she couldn't tolerate water on it at all. Like a lot of people searching for answers, she had tried the trending routines circulating on TikTok, and had eventually stripped everything back to just jojoba oil.
Starting slow, on purpose
Julie had already been coming to me for relaxation and a bit of luxe self care. In November and December of 2025, she committed to properly focusing on her skin, and I started the way I always do, with a thorough consultation.
From there, I built her a general routine designed to help her skin adapt slowly to different actives, rather than overwhelming a barrier that was already under significant stress. My early goal was simple, calm the inflammation and start strengthening her barrier before anything else.
I introduced an EGF serum and a gentle moisturiser, while Julie used up her existing cleanser. I was conscious not to over cleanse skin that was already fighting to hold onto moisture and function.
What I was doing in clinic
In the treatment room, I kept things equally considered. Yellow, Red and NIR LED only, weekly, or as often as Julie could manage. No aggressive treatments while her skin barrier was this compromised. My goal in those early months was calm, consistent support, nothing more.
As Julie's skin began to adapt, I slowly layered in more. I introduced an enzyme to support cellular renewal and help move her skin through its natural phases. I added a youth activating oil and a cleansing balm, and as Julie started noticing her skin feeling tight and dry, I introduced a sleep mask to help nourish and support her barrier overnight.
It was never only about the topicals
One of the biggest parts of Julie's journey happened outside my treatment room. She committed to a high dosage of internal EFAs and began working with a kinesiologist, who supported her with targeted supplementation. Around the same time, Julie discovered mould in her home, and began the process of addressing it, an often overlooked but significant factor in ongoing skin inflammation.
Gut health became a major priority too. For Julie, and for me, it was clear that lasting change in her skin was going to come from treating the whole picture, not just what was visible on the surface.
It's important I mention that Julie also saw a dermatologist during this time, who prescribed steroid treatment to address the internal symptoms connected to her barrier disorder. This medical care sat alongside everything I was doing, and I worked in support of it, not in place of it. When a skin concern needs medical assessment or treatment, I will always say so.
Consistency, month after month
Once Julie's skin had stabilised, I moved her to monthly in clinic enzyme treatments, always with her barrier as the central focus. The combination of consistent internal support and considered external treatment, sustained over months rather than weeks, is what made the real difference.
What Julie's journey tells me
Julie's results are a genuine reflection of how I approach skin at my clinic. Skin conditions, particularly barrier disorders, rarely improve from a single product, a single treatment, or a quick fix. In my experience, they improve when what is happening internally and externally are both addressed, together, with patience and consistency.
If your skin feels reactive, inflamed, tight, or like nothing you try seems to help, Julie's story might sound familiar. I would love to help you understand what is actually happening with your skin, and build a plan around what it truly needs.

Acne Is More Than Just Skin Problem
Why I Believe Acne Deserves a Different Conversation
June is Acne Awareness Month, and as a skin therapist, this is a conversation I'm incredibly passionate about.
Over the years, I've worked with so many clients who walk through my doors feeling frustrated, defeated, and exhausted from trying to "fix" their skin. They've bought the products, followed the trends, tried the harsh treatments, and spent countless hours searching for answers online. Yet despite all of that effort, they're still breaking out.
The truth is, acne is rarely as simple as we're often led to believe.
One of the biggest misconceptions about acne is that it's just a skin problem. That if we can find the right cleanser, the right spot treatment, or the right active ingredient, the problem will disappear.
But in reality, acne is often a reflection of what's happening both within the skin and within the body.
That's why at Skin Ritual Studio, my approach has never been about attacking the skin into submission. Instead, I focus on understanding why the acne is occurring in the first place and creating a plan that supports the skin as a whole.
Acne Is A Complex Condition
Acne develops through a combination of factors including inflammation, oil production, hormones, genetics, skin barrier dysfunction, lifestyle influences, and sometimes internal health imbalances.
For some people, acne may be largely hormonal. For others, stress, gut health, chronic inflammation, or inappropriate skincare may be playing a significant role.
This is why two people can have acne that looks similar on the surface but requires completely different treatment approaches.
One of the most important things I tell my clients is that acne is not a reflection of poor hygiene, laziness, or doing something wrong.
In fact, many of the clients I see are doing too much.
They're over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, using multiple active ingredients, and constantly switching products in search of a quick fix.
Unfortunately, this often creates even more inflammation and disruption within the skin.
The Importance Of A Healthy Skin Barrier
One of the first things I assess when working with acne clients is the health of their skin barrier.
Your skin barrier is your skin's natural protective shield. It helps retain hydration, regulate inflammation, protect against external irritants, and support healthy skin function.
When the barrier becomes compromised, the skin often becomes more reactive, more inflamed, and less able to heal effectively.
This is something I see every single week.
Many people assume that because they have acne, they need stronger products. But often, what their skin actually needs is support.
Sometimes the most transformative thing we can do is simplify a routine, restore hydration, calm inflammation, and allow the skin to function the way it was designed to.
Healthy skin functions better. And when skin functions better, it often heals better.
Looking Beyond The Surface
One of the reasons I love treating acne is because it encourages us to look at the bigger picture.
Our skin doesn't exist in isolation.
Hormones, stress levels, sleep quality, nutrition, digestive health, and overall wellbeing can all influence what we see on the skin.
This is why I often recommend that clients experiencing persistent or stubborn acne work alongside a qualified naturopath or healthcare practitioner. Sometimes there are internal factors contributing to the skin that deserve further investigation and support.
As skin therapists, we can achieve incredible results externally, but the best outcomes often come from addressing both the internal and external contributors to acne.
My Favourite Treatments For Acne-Prone Skin
At Skin Ritual Studio, my treatment recommendations are always personalized because every skin is different.
However, some of my favourite treatments for supporting acne-prone skin include OBiome Enzyme Therapy, LED Light Therapy, and customized Bespoke Facials.
These treatments allow us to focus on supporting skin function, reducing inflammation, encouraging healing, and strengthening the skin barrier rather than simply chasing individual breakouts.
My goal is never just to clear a pimple.
My goal is to create healthier, stronger, more resilient skin over time.
There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Solution
If there is one thing I hope you take away from this blog, it's that acne is incredibly individual.
The product that worked for your friend may not work for you.
The treatment you saw on social media may not be what your skin needs.
And the solution is rarely found in a single miracle product.
Real skin health takes patience, consistency, education, and a personalised approach.
That's why every acne journey at Skin Ritual Studio begins with understanding your skin, your lifestyle, your goals, and the factors that may be contributing to your breakouts.
You're Not Alone In This
Acne can impact far more than just your skin.
It can affect confidence, self-esteem, social situations, and how you feel when you look in the mirror.
If you're struggling with your skin, please know that you're not alone, and you don't have to navigate it by yourself.
There are answers. There is support. And with the right approach, healthy skin is absolutely achievable.
If you're ready to better understand your skin and create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you, I'd love to help.
